How would you start building a robust solutions practice in your newsroom?

I'm a freelancer, so I don't work within a newsroom. However, if I were to build a robust solutions journalism practice in a newsroom, I would anticipate pushback and plan accordingly.

Firstly, I would recognize the importance of finding allies and seek out editors or colleagues who are more open to the idea of solutions journalism and who are likely to appreciate its merits. Building relationships with these people would be crucial in gaining support and fostering engagement.

Secondly, I'd prepare to address misconceptions about solutions journalism in conversations and emphasize that it is not synonymous with "advocacy journalism" or "feel-good news." I'd be ready to provide examples and a clear and accurate explanation of what solutions journalism entails, highlighting its rigorous approach and commitment to journalistic principles.

Lastly, I would emphasize that solutions journalism not only has benefits to the consumer and wider society but also represents a financially viable means of reporting the news. I'd point to studies and evidence that demonstrate the effectiveness and impact of solutions journalism, and highlight its potential to both attract audiences while generating revenue.

Hopefully by taking these steps it would counter any resistance to the idea and maybe lead to the integration of solutions journalism as a practice within the newsroom.

James: Beautifully written.
May I add one thing?
I am sure you are very familiar with the plane emergency protocol: “Should an emergency situation occur, you need to put your own oxygen mask on first, before attempting to help those around you.”
In addition to the points you have mentioned, I would like to stress the importance of the leader being fully ready to show others the way forward, assist them as they embark on their novel journey, provide them with the guidance they need …
That is why a leader must build himself / herself before reaching out to others and start building the team.
Again, thanks for the insights and all the best ...

Thank you, Habib, for your very interesting comment. Personally, I've never experienced a newsroom, but I completely agree with you that the success of implementing any organizational change will be contingent on the willingness of leadership to embrace it.
