Where to start

Where to start

Firstly, it has to have support from all parts of the newsroom, from the top-down and bottom up.

There needs to be training so people understand what solutions journalism is and isn't.

Newsroom leaders should encourage reporters to come up with ideas for solutions journalism projects. And they need to give their reporters time to work on those stories, which can be difficult in a newsroom where the focus is on breaking news.

Given newsrooms lack both time and resources, pick a couple of solutions journalism projects to start with and determine the measures of success. Then provide a set timeframe for the next set of projects to begin, to keep the momentum and enthusiasm going.

Make sure solutions journalism is a core part of the newsroom.

Even without any go-signal from top to bottom, someone in the newsroom has to take the courage and write (or attempt to write) a solutions journalism article and see how it goes. Without the courage to write, at the risk of failure, we can never tell how it works; and learn from there.
