Given what we've learned during this course, a key takeaway for me is to rethink the approach to covering an issue and considering not just the problems but solutions, as well as attempts to solve the problems (even if the attempts did not succeed.).
As an editor, a first step for me will involve applying this rethinking and the planning required. It means also getting those who write for me to consider these solutions as part of their story, so helping authors rethink the angles of their story. For this, tools such as those presented in the interview with Swati Sanyal Tarafdar are particularly helpful, notably the chart in which reporters have to think through the problem, the solution, and the evidence.
Once a solutions-oriented process has been woven into our coverage/reporting approaches, we could hopefully measure success through funding, whether sponsorship, donations, or increased readership to raise revenues.
